Actually Pentium-class and newer CPUs have temp sensors:
http://www.intel.com/support/processors/sb/CS-033342.htm
"TCASE is the temperature measurement using a thermocouple embedded in the
center of the heat spreader. This initial measurement is done at the
factory. Post-manufacturing, TCASE is calibrated by the BIOS, through a
reading delivered by a diode between and below the cores."

"Tjunction is synonymous with core temperatures, and calculated based on
the output from the Digital Thermal Sensor (DTS) using the formula Tjunction= (T
junction Max – DTS output)."

And linked off that page is Intel's processor diag tool:
http://www.intel.com/support/processors/sb/CS-031726.htm

Every modern BIOS reports temps, generally to a tenth of a degree (C or
F). CPU & case fans are continuously variable to react in response to
changing temps. This data is available to apps like
http://openhardwaremonitor.org/.

I doubt any software is going to do that.

The pc would have to have a temp gauge and I am not
aware of any consumer boxes that do that.

Even the high end midrange processors only have a
high/low sensor that detects heat/cool but that is a
min/max thing.

All laptops have a real issue with heat and keeping
them from self destruction. Heat sinks and fans just
ain't big enough for a box that's 1"-2" thick.

All,

A sales rep is bringing in his laptop because it is shutting down
intermittently. I have this SWAG that it may be heat related.

What's a decent free PC app that will show me temperatures?

Thanks.
