Thanks for the clarification, Mike. Though I still would rather not have
to install software to configure the router. That's a step backwards in
our increasingly web-oriented world.

To configure it... yes. To use no! I can (and have) connected up Android,
Windows, Linux, Chrome OS, Nook, Kindle, etc to it like you would any other
device. Connect to the wifi, enter your password (if you set one) and go.

Many new consumer devices I have seen require the use of some stupid
configuration tool that if you don't use, the device doesn't work. (Yes, I
have sore spot for wasting TONS of time trying to not use the software on a
Linksys router.)

From what I'm reading the Airport Extreme requires extra software if
connecting via WiFi from a Windows PC. Likewise the setup takes extra
steps for Android devices. IMO those are huge strikes against it unless
you're running a pure Apple environment.

I've been using a D-Link DIR-655 for awhile with no problems.

The unit has been solid. No crashes, no resets, no lockups. And so far
no
need to look for firmware updates.

When using Netgear routers in the past they always became problematic
after
awhile. They'd fail in one way or another. I liked the features & price
but quality was always lacking. In the end I like my Netgear
HomePlug/Powerline adapters but shy away from their other products.

It's expensive, but I have been using the Apple AirPort Extreme for the
past 3 years and has very few problems with it. The number 1 problem is
that it gets warm and I can't stack any other device (like the DSL
modem)
on top of it. Mine has the 2.5 Ghz/5Ghz radios and a separate guest AP
that
can either be routed directly to the internet or they can have their
own separate network. A bonus is being able to work with the device via
an
iPhone/iPad app.

Folks:

I need to get a new router soon ... my Netgear WNDR3700's radio quit
working properly and the only thing I've got now is a junky Linksys.

Any recommendations on a wireless router you've had good experiences
with?

Thanks!
