It's been awhile (ever?) since CHKDSK was run against the PC. I'll try
that, but I doubt that's the issue since everything else runs as expected.

How long has it been since you did a CHKDSK on the PC where you are having
Thunderbird problems?

When I was experience extremely slow response times with my email client
(Windows Live Mail), I opened up the Event Log and under System I saw that
my HD had been throwing errors - CHKDSK could not fix it, I ended up having
to restore my backup to a new disk.
