David,
I just bought a new Seagate Momentum XT drive for my laptop:
http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/products/laptops/laptop-hdd
and so far, I am very impressed with its performance. It lives up to the
marketing claims.
I don't have one yet, but have thought about it. Unlike a full SSD drive
which has no need to do it, I think this hybrid dynamically tries to learn
what is the most frequently accessed stuff and keep that in the SSD
portion. So the initial startup time may not be as indicative as times
after a learning period.
What concerns me is it seems the failure rate is higher on these drives. I
may get one anyway though.
