I don't often undock without shutting down even when I had an XP

I undock my Latitude D630 all the time. I just press the undock button (not the eject button) and it initiates the undock.

It has two undock modes ... warm & hot (configured in BIOS).

A warm undock puts the laptop to sleep and then I can undock it.

Hot undock means it tells Windows (both 7 & XP) that I'm about to undock the device and it should gracefully disconnect all active connections. If a device, such as a USB drive, is active ... it informs me that the undock isn't possible because device xyz is in use. All the internal devices remain active.

Assuming no devices are in use, my external monitor goes dark, the desktop is transfered to to the laptop display, and a notification message pops up telling me it's safe to remove the device.
