Gerald -

No gotchas...it just takes a bit of persuasion!

DO NOT call AT&T customer service. That was my first call, and I wasted an
hour arguing first with the customer service rep (most likely who was
located in Bangalore, given her accent), who then transferred me to her
supervisor (in the USA).

They will tell you that they cannot authorize it...

The U.S. customer service rep told me to call one of the local 'core'
(company) AT&T stores and talk to the manager. So, I called the nearest
store in Austin last Thursday morning (telling my story a /third/ time), and
he got my free microcell approved by mid-afternoon...

(I think it helped when I reminded him to check my history as an AT&T
customer. I have spent well over $ 10,000.00 on AT&T wireless services
since I became a customer in 1999.)

So what does it take to get a free one? Are there any gotchas?
