I'm getting this a lot recently ... but I can't figure out exactly why.

When I manually flush the mail queue ... the messages that are in this state send correctly.
Would you perhaps be the "victim" of grey-listing?

A common weapon against spam is to deny the first connection from a given IP-number in a while. This causes trivial SMTP-implementations (like those in spam-bots) to go away, and normal SMTP-implementations to try again a little later.

I do not know sendmail well enough to confirm or deny that that is what happens here.
