The profile data and settings aren't important to us, but things like the
desktop configuration, internet favorites and saved passwords are very
important to the users.

One of the benefits of a roaming profile is that a new computer doesn't look
different to the user. This saves IT lots of headaches when deploying new
computers or moving users. This benefit is lost if the profiles are not
kept in sync.

Roaming profiles do not replace backups. They should be limited to a

very small size, e.G. 20-50MB. This will keep logon times short. All
directories that could contain data (e.g. the Documents library)
should be redirected using folder redirection.

Agreed.

While it is true that settings can be lost in such cases (especially
if he signs on to other machines during this time), if you implemented
roaming profiles properly this should not have any bigger
consequences.

Also agreed. A side point is that if the feature is going to be used, it
should be used well, so that it adds value instead of creating headaches.

Even when roaming profiles are standard, there are probably users (such as
the IT admins) for whom it should not be used.
