Gerald, if that laptop has only been off for 40 hours over 2 years, that
means it's been on for 17,472-40=17,432 hours. In terms of run time for a
laptop, that's a lot of hours.

If you have one of those cans of compressed air (a "duster"), try blowing
that through the air intake on the laptop (with the laptop off). It's
possible, likely even, that dust & debris has built up on the fan.

If the fan is truly going bad and the laptop is out of warranty, verify the
part number and look for it online. For instance,

My wife's Thinkpad T61 just turned two years old last week. It's always on

Last week the fan started making quite a bit of noise. It was quiet this
morning but I am concerned about the fan possibly having to be replaced so
soon.

I myself just got a Thinkpad T500 and have had no problems, but it's only
6 months old. This replaced a Thinkpad T23 (which was maxed out at a gig
of ram) but it just couldn't keep up with running Notes, WDSCi, Office
and heavy web content etc. The only problem it has is that it gets a 'fan
error' at startup and I think that's due to a (Lenovo recommended)
enhanced controller bios upgrade I applied. The T23 also ran Windows 7
quite well.
