The difference is that Acrobat tells you during the install process that
it is installing the plug-in. MS did it without the users knowledge or
permission.

Neither .NET 3.5 SP1 installs automatically (you have to opt-in into
Microsoft Update) nor does Skype or Acrobat Reader. But all of them
install Browser extensions.
