I Installed the Magic Jack over the weekend. It seems to work well enough,
so I am cutting off my Vonage service tomorrow.
As I see it, the biggest disadvantage of Magic Jack versus Vonage is that it
has to be attached to a PC - but that's ok, I wanted to put a PC in the
living room for playing multimedia stuff through the TV anyway. I found a
used Dell Optiplex GX 270 (3.0 GHz Tower) at Discount Electronics (in
Austin) with a licensed copy of XP Pro for 179.00 that will work just fine
for this purpose.
It won't even need a monitor for now, since I'll be able to use remote
desktop to control it from the laptops in the house.
Even counting the additional power usage, I'm still saving around $100.00
over the first year of use and approximately $300.00/yr after that, compared
to the cost of Vonage.
