in Process Explorer, you can point a crosshair to a window, and it will show you which process it is.

Maybe that's a way to identify it?

look. After that, I'd try visiting the Sysinternals site and getting

I've been away from a number of things for too long -- but Win2K
isn't one of them. (I'm even going to pretend I didn't read John's
advice to upgrade beyond W2K, since I'm _never_ going to both
upgrade _and_ continue using Windows on any of my PCs. Linux will be
fully in use before that ever happens. :-) )

Anyway, yeah, WRKACTJOB would be useful. I'm pretty sure I've seen
how to do it from a technical perspective somewhere in years gone
by. (I.e., how to access attributes of windows, etc., to determine
where they came from.) But ya' never know what's been discovered in
recent years if ya' don't ask.

Even Windows has its secrets revealed over years. There's always the
chance that some tricky utility was made available somewhere.

BTW, I'm avoiding describing what I _think_ was part of the original
cause.
