Depends on your service (and service area).
I've got AT&T DSL without such problems. A friend had Qwest DSL and experienced a lot of drops.
You might want to try posting a message to the AT&T Direct forum at Broadband Reports (
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/sbcdirect). That forum is monitored by AT&T techs (sometimes tier 3). I've had really good luck there.
Also, check your router and make sure you have it's 'keep alive' function active.
