Not at all. In fact I remember having to use a variant for a particular
piece of programming. Don't remember the application of it, but it
seemed quite necessary. I think it was when I presented the typical
File Open dialog box, if the user selects one file, the return type is
string, but if they select more than one file, the return type is an
array of string fields. I then had to do a field type query on the
variant to determine what to do next.
The reason I recommended using a variant for this thread's original
problem was to see what the returned variable and value were being set
to when it operated incorrectly.
