the controllers alone. Not ideal, but not outrageous. I can add on

You're right, the devil is in the valves. I was thinking of some sort of
solenoid type setup, but there's also the question of response time. I
think if we can control the flow @ less than 50ms we'll be ok, but 20ms
would be better. 50ms gives me 20 cycles per second, which I think will
be borderline to do any real control.
Luckily the software side is rather trivial as you're just "printing" a
true black and white bitmap w/192 horizontal bits one line at a time.
