Depending on your budget vs. the need to make sure that the data is secure
you may want to consider a Drobo (
http://www.drobostore.com). It's
no-bran, do-it-yourself RAID. You buy the unit and add from one to four
drives. If you really want to get fancy you can buy an accessory to
attach it to your network. I'm not sure that it's as portable as the
typical external USB drive and it's definitely got a heftier price tag.
Still, if you want to insure the integrity of the data and have an upgrade
path it could be worth it.
From time to time I've thought about buying one myself and then I consider
the alternatives--food, shelter...
