Lots of suggestions and the one I was going to suggest seems you've
already tried. Another poster found that the BIOS had not been set
correctly for a Plug and Play OS. Make sure yours is set.

Must be a sign of the times. There is no option in the BIOS setup for Plug
& Play!

All right, here's the latest.

I swear that this ThinkPad was configured to CIA and/or NSA security
standards. It uses a third-party encryption system, and there were two
instances of this in the Device Manager's System Devices, one of which was
functioning properly, but the other not. The malfunctioning one could not
find drivers for it and, seeing that the other one was fine, I uninstalled
the malfunctioning one. I reset the DVD-RAM drive assignment (again) in the
Computer Management applet, rebooted, and voilà! After the restart, the
DVD-RAM drive was assigned to R:, and my network share assigned to D:! I
still have to see if it will survive a powerdown and restart, but I'm
hopeful the problem is solved.

Take-away for others trying to solve this: Check your Device Manager to see
if there are any devices that need attention, and resolve them as necessary.

Thanks to all who offered suggestions!
