Okay you Thuderbird advocates, how does it perform with a large number of
IMAP items (like from Gmail) after a couple months on more than one account?
I have been using Outlook, but the performance is starting to go downhill. I
am guessing the number of cached items has something to do with that (and
apparently, you can't clear it).

Yes, the more mail you keep per folder (gmail tag), the slower will be. Thunderbird has a folder option for offline use which should cache the message bodies, but I can't see how this avoids pulling the message header list from the server.

I periodically delete older mail so I to keep the folder size reasonable for IMAP. As Joe mentioned, you could just archive it instead. All depends on how you organize your mail. In my case, I also pull the same account by SMTP for a permanent archive.

I like gmail's server side filter rules which let me tag by list id. Lists like PCTECH don't grow nearly as fast as midrange-l or CPF0000.
