While wearing my black hat and riding in a black helicopter...

Hmm, let's suppose I feel threatened by Google's advances in the marketplace
and let's also suppose I operate a number of web sites which use the
individuals email address as the user name for logging in. Now let's
suppose I test to see if individual gmail users use the same password
repeatedly on my many different sites and having found that to be the case,
I test their gmail account using that password and find that low and
behold I'm able to log in. Now to generate some FUD about Google in the
marketplace, I decide to delete some messages and perform other acts of
mischief on the unsuspecting victim.

Is this what's going on with Google? Probably not, but is it possible? Why
not? My experience has been that a lot of people are pretty lazy when it
comes to passwords and security and unless there is some sort of enforcement
mechanism they will take the path of least resistance.
