I don't think that would work ... the browser would detect that the
certificate for the session doesn't correspond to the host you are
supposed to be connecting with.

How many browsers are set up to simply accept a new (i.e. forged) certificate from the ISP (man in the middle)? It looks and smells genuine to the user...

For what it's worth, why couldn't an ISP intercept a cert authentication request and supply their own cached (valid) cert?
