Rob,

You've got your answer already but I thought I would throw this in since I
recall you stating that Dekko has a BladeCenter attached to your System i.
Currently only VMWare Server (the free one) can run on System x servers and
BladeCenters attached to the System i but IBM has announced that on 9/14
they will make available PTFs that will allow VMWare ESX Server to run
on iSCSI attached System x servers and BladeCenters. VMWare ESX Server is
much more efficient than the free VMWare Server and thus will allow you to
run more VMs per processor core which further reduces the number of physical
servers required. Support for other parts of VMWare Infrastructure 3 will be
forthcoming including VMMotion which will allow you to reprovision a VM
while it is still running. This reprovisioning is already fairly easy and
quick using System i virtual disks but the VM does have to be shut down
during the move. We've been using VMWare Server on our IXA attached System x
servers quite successfully but with the ability to run ESX Server, we are
planning to migrate to iSCSI and ramp up our virtualization efforts. I
recommend you check into VMWare and learn about its capabilities; for our
needs, WMWare and System i are a powerful combination.

Kind regards,

BJ

A posting from today on midrange-L got my attention. And I thought my
tangent should come on this list.

Basically if I was using vmware on a client to run Linux and Windows, can
I be accessing applications on both simultaneously on that same client?
Like, WDSC on Windows, and some linux application?

Bet that makes the screen real estate look rather interesting also.

I know -nothing- about vmware.

lpar I can grasp. That's a server issue.
