Suddenly I have started getting "A network cable is unplugged" messages
flashing every second or so on my XP Pro machine with a Linksys 4-port
wireless router. The message keeps flashing, but the e-mail and every
thing is working.

Nothing has been changed or added that I am aware of.

Any ideas of what it might be?

First a question ... I assume you are hardwired into the router? Do you
also have a wireless connection active at the same time?

Couple of ideas ...

1. Bad router. I had a Netopia router (the one that drives the SDSL) go
completely casters up and the lights associated with the ports were
blinking ... when I plugged my laptop into the router, I got the exact
same behavior ... with each blink of the router light, Windows would
report a plugged & unplugged message.

2. Bad NIC.

3. Bad cable? Although I've never seen this myself, a bad or marginal
cable might show this behavior.

If you have a wireless connection active at the same time, the your
connection might be coming through the wireless, so you have a
connection even if the wired is not working.
