Hi Dan!

With only 256Meg of RAM and an older Pentium chip, you're going to have 
performance issues running the Gnome or KDE desktops. Bumping RAM to 512Meg 
will help. I would recommend ICEWM as a desktop manager. It's pretty 
lightweight and looks a lot like the old Win95 interface. You should be able to 
install it via the Adept package manager in Ubuntu. Make it your default 
desktop and you should be in business.

The other recommendation is to download the XUBUNTU live-CD 
http://www.xubuntu.org and try that out. You can see if it works and install 
from the CD.

Linux on older equipment is doable, but you should be prepared to do a bit of 
research. For example, http://www.thinkwiki.org is a great place to start if 
you're interested in loading linux on an IBM Thinkpad. Google around for Linux 
information on the devices installed on your PC and don't be afraid to 
reinstall from scratch a few times to build your knowledge.
