Anyone know of a Thunderbird extension that will let me quickly switch

And I take it that clicking on the column headers is not comprehensive
enough?

No, because that changes the filter to be ONLY sort on the column ... I
want the messages to be sorted by that column AND threaded.

If I click on the thread column, then it only sorts the messages by
thread in the order they were received.

My normal sort order is by date + threaded ... so threads with new
messages are at the top.
