The HP cartridges have coded expiration dates.  I'm not sure what the
cartridge remanufacturers do; whether they wipe the dates, reset them,
or what.  I buy OfficeMax or OfficeDepot 'brand' cartridges mostly and
have no issues.

I also used to stock up and keep a couple on hand, but since I don't
print that much anymore and they do expire after so many months, I've
dropped that to keeping just 0-1 extra cartridges on hand.  0 mostly; I
go buy when the ink level drops below 30 or so percent, but I'll pre-buy
if the cartridge is on sale.  A friend works for OfficeMax corporate and
sends "friends and family" deals once in a while; those usually include
some sort of discount.

Wait until you add up the ink costs over the life of the printer on 
the "cheap" ink jets.  It is astronomical compared to the toner in 
laser printers.

and to help ensure you pay premium prices for official ink instead of 
knock offs, are considering putting electronic codes on the cartridges

so the printer will only work with "genuine" cartidges, plus they 
won't accept a refill.

I don't know if any printers are actually doing this yet, but I've 
heard that it is coming...
