From: Dan A *general* question of wikipedia: Does anyone care to estimate the accuracy of information presented in wikipedia? Is there a vetting process for verifying information? My take has been to use wikipedia as a starting point and let other "verifiable" sources of information (hopefully linked to in the wiki) prove the accuracy.
Be careful how you ask this question, Dan. You may incur the wrath of the "social organismists" (a word I just now made up). In general, the Wikipedia is looked upon as one of THE standards by which you can measure the overall accuracy of a social network. The Wikipedia is "vetted" by the community; if someone posts something wrong, someone else will fix it. In regard to things technical, or "neutrally factual", the Wikipedia does a pretty good job overall. I use it much like you do; I get initial information and then do my own verification. I've found its data to be pretty darned accurate. Things that are more political or ideological in nature can be somewhat more biased. Joe
