Haven't I heard that McAfee home products are crap?  

Yeah, but we use the Enterprise product.  I'm not saying it's perfect,
but it does seem better.  We also manage updates via McAfee's EPO engine
vs. having the PCs autoupdate against McAfee's site all the time.

Of all people, I guess I'm surprised that you don't have a firewall at

home.  Are you using a router firewall and not any software firewall?

Router firewall.  Because I practice relatively safe surfing, I'm not
too worried about it.  Ditto for my wife for the most part.  We also
have very little in the way of valuable data on our PCs; my browser
cache is probably the most 'dangerous' thing there.

I used to run Tiny Personal Firewall 2.x (which is now Kerio) but lost
the installer after I had to reload my PC.  I know I can still get it
but just haven't bothered.

I find I use my PCs at home less and less over time.  I'm becoming more
of a typical user and less of a hobbyist/enthusiast.  I think I get my
fill at the office and by the time my 8-10 hours are up I don't want to
stare at a screen anymore even if it is for entertainment vs. work.

WGA has been known to disable legit XP installs.

????? Oh, wait, that's right.  This is Microsoft we're talking about

here.

Yeah.  Livingston is calling WGA a marketing program as it's designed to
fear/shame people in to buying more copies of Windows than they need (to
replace existing legit copies).  Today's issue of Windows Secrets, BTW,
notes an alternative to Windows Update that ignores WGA.
