The key is sufficient if you have the right kind of XP CD. If the 6GB had XP Pro on it and you've a XP Pro CD, that's a good sign. An XP Home CD wouldn't work with an XP Pro key. But it goes a bit deeper than that. OEM, Retail, and MSDN CDs (I think there's a fourth) for XP Pro (and Home) are also slightly different and a key for the OEM version won't work with a Retail CD, etc. Your key & CD need to match. Even more, an XP (Pro or Home) CD with no pre-loaded SP vs. one with SP1 vs. one with SP2 are also keyed uniquely. I don't know how to tell from looking at a key what CD it matches with. I don't know if anyone can tell. Quite a pain, yes? Worst case, you can buy XP Pro OEM for about $135-140. John A. Jones, CISSP Americas Information Security Officer Jones Lang LaSalle, Inc. If it's a retail copy, you should be able to.
That's what I figured. But, the best way to do
it is to do a fresh install and use the key from the existing install (and then wipe the 6GB disk). The key would be with the XP CD.
Which I don't have in my possession. But I have the key for the XP that's installed on the 6GB drive. So, then, could I use another retail XP Pro Upgrade CD-rom and use the key that's on the 6GB install? If yes, would it matter whether CD-rom I end up using might have the SP2 built-in? Would a key from a pre-SP2 build work?
