Hi John and the gang -
Personally, while ZA gets high marks I've been using an ancient version of the Kerio firewall for years. It's now been bought by Sunbelt Software, the folks who make Counterspy. For a limited time they're offering the Kerio FW for $14.95. Or you can use the free version: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm
I have a Linux-based firewall/router system protecting my LAN and DMZ, but I also run Kerio Personal Firewall 2.1.5 (free for personal use) on my desktop. As a technonerd I far prefer KPF over ZA since KPF is mostly based on straight-forward rules.
I use a software firewall on PC not only to block any rogue applications but also to protect me when I have a VPN connection established from my desktop to work. Any unsolicited packets from the systems at work aren't blocked by my firewall/router because they are encapsulated in the VPN packets. Once they come out my end of the tunnel KPF can, and does, block them. I see it in the KPF log.
