Remote Desktop puts you ON your home PC, so that your laptop becomes like a terminal, but all your key and mouse actions take place on the PC. But this requires XP (probably Pro) on the home PC. And your laptop needs the client - included with XP (again, probably Pro). But you can get the clients from MS for free.

PC-Anywhere accomplishes the same thing, but you need to pay for it.

This assumes you are talking about working on the home PC from another PC, not just using the PC as a file server and running the apps on your laptop.

On the home PC, to set up Remote Desktop, right-click on My Computer, click on Properties, and I think the tab is Remote Users. You don't need to list yourself as a user if you are in the Administrators group. Otherwise, enter your user info.

Finally, when you start you laptop client, you need the IP address of your home PC on your local network. Very cool!
