Thanks to all for the hints - I'll let you all know what happens.  Just one
comment - to those of us who are not Linux literate the "just create a Linux
boot CD and ...." type suggestions could do with a teeny bit more
explanation <grin>

Right or left click causes Explorer to consume vast amounts of CPU and do
nothing!

For some reason Win2K will not offer the "Safe mode" menu unless it spots a
problem during boot - no idea why.

I doubt it - see answer below.

System CD?  You don't think that $2,500 IBM laptops come with such an
expensive option do you!  Dreamer!

~WRF2693.tmp - it was one It thinks it is 150+Mb but I doubt that is real.
