I don't concider this OT since a mac, is really a PC. As to the question: Since OS X is UNIX, it has built in VPN (generally open-standards only) and there is a 5250 emulator through Mochasoft. Yes, there is an MS version of Office (although look and feel might be a bit different). For a home machine (assuming no gaming) an iMac or low-end G5 would be the best.
