RE: Internet Filter Software

I run my firewall (at home) on a P233 (that is Pentium 1) with 64 MB of RAM.
It runs great! 

To be specific on what it is, IPCop used to be based on RedHat, now the new
upcoming version will be LFS (Linux From Scratch). IPCop is a distribution
in itself (like RedHat or Fedora), only it is designed specifically for
operating as a firewall. So like Bob stated, there isn't software to
configure and load. You pop in the CD, boot the computer, install the
software (pretty brainless act here). It should automatically detect the
NICs, you just specify what configuration you need (see the website for
details). Then after you reboot, you hit the web configuration site either
port 81 (non-SSL) or port 445 (SSL), and start going through all of the
options to setup the firewall how you would like it. When that is done, you
can back it up to floppy, and you are done. The best part about this over a
Linksys Router is that if you want to, you can go into the console and add
more customizations to the system. Since it is Linux, you can do anything a
regular linux system can do.

Dave,

You end up with a Linux machine.  By "not building it", I mean you don't
have to explicitly load Linux.

The install will format, partition your disks, and then load Linux.

The version of Linux is based on one of the common distributions, but it has
been modified.  Main striped down to eliminate unneeded things.

Requirements are pretty minimal.  2 Supported PCI NIC's.  You can get ISA's
to work, but PCI is much easier.  I think only 128 meg of memory and 500 meg
of disk and 400mhz or better processor.  Exact requirements are it
www.ipcop.org .  A very good FAQ that will answer many of your questions is

Grab an old machine you where going to throw away anyway.  Download and burn
the CD.  Install it.  You'll probably be up and running in 30 minutes or
less!
