Didn't know about that one - thanks.

Setting the properties seems (at least for the time being) to have solved
part of the problem.  The black screen and the huge cursor still appears
when tools like WDSc or CODE run a DOS command, but at least the normal DOS
window is better.  Heaven knows what caused it to lose it's settings in the
first place though!
