Just to provide a close to this issue. It turns out the problem was caused
by the CCSID of the Script.
 
It was a "can't see the forest for the trees"  moment. During the
development process the CCSID of the
Script changed from *PCASCII to 37. Changing it back let the Script run
successfully.
 
Many thanks to Richard Schoen for his excellent work on QSHONI.
I've used it to implement sFTP and cURL and it was a timesaver.
 
Also, thanks to all who commented. Open Source is a new adventure for me.
