*disclaimer* i'm not a real unixy guy, but can/have figured stuff out.

i have found it easier to use mobaXterm for some ssh/scp/X things.

when I started a ssh session to my IBM i then tried xt5250 <host name> up popped a xwindowed 5250 session.

i always get confused about the whole xserver thing. where they start what options etc.

That's a character-mode TN5250, a real classic, one I used for a long time
and still occasionally load.

And IBM i will never be an X Windowing System *server* ... it's already a
*client*.
The server is the display. The X application is the program that uses the
display server.
I run X applications from time to time from IBM i as a client, e.g., my Ublu
<https://github.com/jwoehr/ublu> in windowing mode.
