If native database access and web services is a priority then the evolving project ILEastic hosted at GitHub may be an option. It probably is not there yet as some features are still missing but Niels and his team make good and steady progress. The project provides a web service framework and the best thing is: it is all ILE and open source.

I have tried it and it's easy to install and seems to work at the basic
level so far on V7R3.

However no database access currently to DB2 and I tried the SQL Server
connections and that doesn't work either.

I opened an issue for review.

For me it's a no-go until I can use database access, but it's
definitely a cool technical feat.

You can actually create an app in visual studio and the EXE will run
from PASE.

This is very interesting. Does anyone have a link or a quick guide on
how to even get started playing around with this?
We use ASNA but this could be helpful for some web services used for a
native mobile app applications instead of creating it in ASNA.

I shared the same article with the .NET developers in our company.

Our shop uses .NET to develop web apps. Some of our ASP.NET web apps
are too large and too deeply embedded in the Microsoft ecosystem to
ever be migrated to the IBM i. However, in terms of replacing green
screens with web apps, the Mono framework could let us simplify
architecture by cutting out the need for anything running on a Windows
server. Run the ASP.NET web app in Apache on the IBM i. This approach
would allow our developers to use the same language (C#) for developing
ASP.NET web apps running on Windows, ASP.NET web apps running on IBM i,
and ASP.NET web services running on IBM i.

I think some concerns from our shop would be: (1) performance of web
services built with Mono on the IBM i under heavy loads, (2) high
availability of those web services given that the port of Mono has just
become available, (3) lack of commercial support for Mono on IBM i, and
(4) questions about the future of Mono given the open source,
multi-platform .NET Core alternative (though Mono and Core may be
slowly converging, since Core is open for use by the Mono community and
Microsoft owns the Mono-based Xamarin mobile app platform).
