Thanks Jesse, I learned something new.

I did run into a problem with it am not 100% sure where (potential) bugs should be reported.

after the updatedb finished, i was looking a the various options and got the following error.

-bash-4.3$ locate --statistics
Database /QOpenSys/var/locatedb is in the GNU LOCATE02 format.
Assertion failed: __EX, file locate.c, line 868
Database was last modified at 2018:04:05 15:56:04.000000000IOT/Abort trap (core dumped)

Uh oh. Looks like you need the 'sort' command. Looks like a missing
dependency that IBM might need to fix.

In the meantime, to figure out how to get it, just run:
yum clean expire-cache
yum provides /QOpenSys/pkgs/bin/sort

That will show you that you need to install the "coreutils-gnu" package.
So, running "yum install coreutils-gnu" should help!

Btw, "yum provides" is very handy, and also supports wildcards. For
instance, you could have said "yum provides \*sort" and it would have
given you hits for anything ending in sort, like /QOpenSys/pkgs/bin/tsort

Good luck!

downloaded the updated "findutils" and am trying to use the "locate" and

"updatedb" commands.
I understand that before using "locate" i must run "updatedb" to create
the file for "locate" to look through.

I get the following from a PASE command line:

> updatedb
/QOpenSys/pkgs/bin/updatedb[323]: /QOpenSys/pkgs/bin/sort: not
found. (I get the same from putty)
$

am I missing a config or something so that the "sort" in this directory
is used /QOpenSys/usr/bin/sort ?
