I feel strongly that this is the case as well. It's analogous to, and
possibly could be considered a domain-specific case of, the
progression from "structural" to "procedural" to "modular" to "object
oriented".
A lot of the same fundamental concepts and goals ("need for
organization") are underpinning all of those terms.
There is just a practical balance of functional separation and
maintainability that will rule the day.
Indeed. I'd like to add (and maybe you meant this but didn't feel it
was worth stating explicitly) that balance can vary from person to
person and from technology to technology. The languages and editors
and so forth can significantly nudge the balance in one direction or
another.
