I appreciate what you're saying. At least what I believe you're

I officially changed my middle name to 'muddled' many years ago now :-)

You've mentioned
"embedding" and CALL/PARM. I don't think these amount to the same
thing.

Yeah, I didn't do a good job with that. I should instead have drawn the
distinction between CALL/PARM and an API call.

Here are the IBMi-to-PASE APIs:
https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/ssw_ibm_i_73/apis/pase1b.htm
The reason it's this way is because of /what PASE is/:

'PASE for i enables you to run many of your AIX® applications on the
IBM® i operating system with little or no change, and effectively
expands your platform solution portfolio.'
https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/ssw_ibm_i_73/rzalf/rzalfgetstart.htm

IBM are bending PASE around a new mandrel, but it hasn't reached it's
new shape just yet. I'm hoping that if it's at all possible, bury the
complexities of the IBM i-to-PASE APIs under the covers and make the
interface be more integrated. Kind of like the RPG-to-JNI interface.
It's not CALL/PARM, but it's not a naked API call either.
