Expired certificates are a very common reason for something that had
been working to suddenly stop working with an SSL-related error. The
next most common is that someone's OS (either the client or the
server) has just gotten an update that affects the SSL library.

SSL-related errors are virtually never the fault of the
application-level language (because all of them just defer to whatever
lower-level SSL library is installed on the OS).
