Thanks Mark,

I understand what you're saying and am the one who has been promoting to the community the recent early-adopter experimentation of an inclusive platform - one that would help minimize the “cavorting across the web” that we all know can be a real barrier to rapid value delivery for business programmers. But I’m not here to debate that issue at this time.

I have a question to David and Pete (as Admins for this IBMiOSS list) that I believe is relevant. In the interest of transparency, would it be possible to periodically publish the numbers of subscribed members of this list? If not, could you at least publish the current number of subscribed members of this list? I believe this information will be enlightening to us all - and if it’s already there somewhere, then I apologize for asking a dumb question; but how do I find it?

Cheers, *bg

PS - I admit I’m a newbie to mailing lists, could anyone tell me how to participate in a discussion here that occurred before I subscribed to this list? I can definitely find the discussions via search engines and view them in the list archives (those are significant benefits); but I can’t figure out how to contribute to that thread if I wasn’t subscribed at that time the originally discussion occurred. Hoping someone can help!

Here's the bottom line for me. The mailing list is quick and easy. I suspect that is true of many if not most folks that receive these emails. In fact that easy part is key. I don't have to go anywhere to obtain the content. It comes to me. If I have to go find it, I am simply going to Google what I am looking for, and any discussion like this would be lost to me. Long ago I stopped participating on the iSeries News forums in favor of the midrange list. It was easier, less time consuming.

In addition, while OSS is interesting to me, most of my work is done in RPG. I believe that is true for many if not most of those who receive these lists. For me the community is here, not somewhere else, and I would rather the community stay here. If all OSS discussion moves elsewhere, I suspect I won't be a part of it on a regular basis because I just don't have the time to go cavorting over the web participating in this community and that. I guess that's the bottom line for me. In addition, if the OSS discussion is pulled from these lists, we are actively reinforcing the stereotype that RPG developers are stuck in the 80's. It is this information that needs to be here where the RPG community is, for the sake of the platform, to inform and perhaps persuade those old RPGers that there are alternatives on this platform, and it is useful to have more than one tool in your toolbox.

Which characterization should we debate first?
