Jim, I think you need to be clear, especially at this early stage, if
you are using pub400.com, Litmis, or your own shop's machine. This is
important for getting the right information to the right people
(Holger, Aaron, or Kevin, for example).

I believe the true test, or at least a much better test, for how well
pip is ultimately going to work for C-based packages, is to try it on
a system with Option 3 installed.

I wouldn't say it's quite fair to make assessments yet, because
pub400.com and Litmis are still very new. As is this very list.
Everything is only just beginning to come together. Yes, these options
have been available for a while now, but you know the admins at most
shops do not have the time or interest to install them, and even shops
that *have* already installed them typically do not have enough Python
(or other open source) knowledge to understand what it is they've
installed, or how to properly kick the tires.
