You are correct John. I was installing pandas which requires numpy. It
failed on the numpy install. Also failed on installing pillow which is
part of reportlab which is the big PDF generation library I've used for
years. In my opinion (as a 10+ year Python developer) Python on IBM i
isn't nearly as compelling as it could be without these 2 packages. Do the
powers at IBM monitor this list? Anything I can do to encourage them to
look in to these two packages?

Without seeing the error myself, my first (and really so far only)
guess would be that there was some trouble trying to compile and
install dependencies, most notably NumPy.

NumPy is one of the giants in the Python ecosystem that dozens if not
hundreds of other packages depend on. It's probably the single most
important Python package that isn't in the standard library.
