The e-mail below is from an external source. Please do not open attachments or click links from an unknown or suspicious origin.

I've read this thread with amusement. Years ago Larry Bolhuis and I started iDevCloud ( now owned by Larry and Pete Massiello). We did it in cooperation with IBM (software). Larry and I funded the hardware, rack space, power/cooling, internet, etc.. they now fund 100% of the environment and run it much the same as we did back then, but without any specific support except from the subscriptions.

We got about enough folks to sign up to break about even and keep the thing going. A lousy $50/month for access to IBM i with current PTFs. We did all the admin. It was an attempt to solve the problem being complained about now. That's after quite an investment in hard dollars and many, many hours to get it set up

Here's my take; if you are unwilling to invest $600 a year in your own development and career I question your devotion to it. Get some skin in the game and stop complaining that no one will do it for you.

A E4A can usually be found for $200-$400, especially if you give it
some time on eBay. I found it very useful to have my "own" machine to
learn and experiment on; it gives you a lot of experience with not
just the application development side of things.

It also gives you space to mess up and start over (I tend to learn
best by
doing) without affecting anyone else.

Thanks for the replies on the topic.

There are a few people around on this list and elsewhere that

Depending on if you have any budget, Power6 E4As are getting really
cheap nowadays, and they're more than enough to learn/develop on.

Hi,

I asked the question to Jon Paris and he thinks that I should ask
on
this
forum for a current update.

Please let me know.

Thanks
