Andy,

The price differential on memory would be an issue....I'll have to quantify
the differences between the iSeries, pSeries, and Wintel memory
prices....I'm sure I'll cry....

There are some data warehouses functions where loading the data into memory
is extremely critical for some people. A few years ago, consultants were
pushing the RS/6000 over the AS/400 as a data warehousing platform due to
the 'arbitrary' memory limits that the AS/400 had. I don't remember all
the details but at one time on the RS/6000 you could get a lot more memory
on the machine for one thing and for another it was cheaper (which is still
the case)....to be honest now that we have our data warehouse on an AS/400
I don't follow that market as closely as I used to.....I don't think all
customers need those kind of memory sizes but ......

Not exactly an objective assessment. I find it curious that the main
touted benefit of a 64-bit operating system is that it will be able to
address much greater chunks of main storage.

I hardly find the concept that 'loading a multi-gigabyte database into
multi-gigabytes of main storage will result in snappier response times'
surprising. Duh!

I don't follow the internal techno-battles with a lot of intelligence,
but surely there is more to 64-bit computing than keeping lots of stuff
in RAM.

Perhaps with the price differential between Intel-based memory and
iSeries memory, Microsoft may be able to market this feature in a way
that would be cost-prohibitive on the iSeries.
