One possible solution is to install WildFly and use the letsencrypt client that is built in there.  If you decide to go that route, here are some sample commands to use in the WildFly CLI that get you going with letsencrypt:

I read (actually, re-read, I think) the presentation that Pete referred me to, and there's very little that falls in the middle ground between "completely self-evident" and "completely over my head."

Up until this morning, I'd never heard of WildFly. Looking it up on Wikipedia, I see that it's the application server formerly known as JBoss AS. That, I've *barely* heard of. Am I to understand that it will run on a Midrange box? Is there a good tutorial for this?

We've got a V7R5 cloud box that I could probably use for experimentation and for learning how to get that option working.

Yes, WildFly is what used to be known as JBoss. Like Tomcat, you can deploy warfiles to run your application. It also includes a lot more that I think makes it easier to use than Tomcat. I used Tomcat for a long time but switched to WildFly some years ago and haven't looked back.

I just did a test run on WildFly on IBM i v7R5 and my quick test didn't work. Running java -version shows java 1.8 which I think is not new enough. I believe it requires java 9. I'm pretty sure I remember an option to install java 9 on V7R5. I'll report back. Sorry if this has been a bit of a red herring.
