I use dbeaver, but it works fine.

This makes me think it's  a possible authority issue, but the use running
the code has enough authority to read & write the object I'm trying to
generate source for.

Yes, I run a CRTSRCPF command, using QSYS2.QCMDEXC, prior to invoking the
GENERATE_SQL call.

Yeah, I thought about that too ... but since I'm already working in SQL, I
figured it would be best to keep this in sql.
