Main memory modules reported as faulty -- MIDRANGE-L

Hi all,

First of all, I'm somewhat new to the AS/400 world, and just a hobbyist, so forgive me for any inaccuracies I might provide.

I recently acquired an AS/400 model 520-9405.
Everything worked fine, except the system was showing a suspiciously low amount of main memory (about 384M). SST in fact reported the 2 main memory modules as not working.
I opened up the case and realised one of the fans had been removed, probably because being faulty, so I purchased a new one along with 4 sticks of new ram of the same type/part id.

After re-IPLing, SST is now reporting all 4 new banks as not working, while the old 2 banks are still there and reported as not found.
I'm wondering now what could be the problem here.
I'm now hoping that the fan removal triggered some sort of "safety system" that disabled those slots, and there's some procedure to "reset" ram modules, but I'm more worried at this point that the fan removal actually damaged the motherboard and so I'll be out of luck.
