A downside of a nightly IPL, if you're using SQL and if you don't use the
Index Advisor to build supporting indexes, is that the MTI's ("maintained
temporary index") created by SQL are discarded at IPL time and SQL will
rebuild those indexes when needed, which in turn offers the potential for
reduced throughput for some of the processing day.

A benefit of a daily IPL is a "best worst day ever" event: a hardware error
that prevents the system from starting is arguably better than a hardware
error causing a crash in the middle of the day's processing...and you're
not using commitment control so when the system comes back you have to
restore files and redo work. Yuk.

Understand, I'm very specifically *not* talking about transferring files
directly from one Midrange box to another. I'm talking about
transferring between a desktop box (whether Mac, Linux or WinDoze) and a
Midrange box.
